Evaluation of the Peri-Implant Sulcus Fluid (Pisf) Volume in Response to Peri-Implant Soft Tissue Inflammation $43.00

Abstract:
Purpose: As they may serve for diagnostic/ prognostic tools, evaluation of the characteristics of biologic fluıids is of particular concern. Peri-implant sulcus fluid (PISF) is among such biologic fluids and analysis of it’s profile and volumetric features are likely to increase our understanding of the dynamics of certain processes around dental implants, including inflammation. The aim of the present study was to analyze the potential volumetric features of PISF in response to peri-implant soft tissue inflammation.
Methods: For this purpose a total of 264 sites were included. PISF samples were obtained from these sites with standardized paper strips by using orifice sampling methodology. These sites were further classified based on the presence/severity of inflammation. ANOVA and Tamhane test was used for the comparative analysis of PISF volume at implant sites exhibiting or lacking inflammation.
Results: PISF volume at inflamed sites (n=131) was higher than clinically healthy sites (n=133) (p=0.0001). When the severity of soft tissue inflammation was concerned, PISF volume presented significantly higher volume at both mild (n=62) and moderate inflammation sites (n=69) (p=0.001). However, comparison of fluid volume at mild and moderately inflamed sites did not present any significant differences (p=0.112). The range of PISF volume at healthy sites (n=133) was 0.02-0.54 µL, while at slightly inflamed and moderately inflamed sites this range was 0.11-0.90 µL, 0.09-1.10 µL, respectively. The findings of the present study demonstrated increased PISF volume with presence of peri-implant soft tissue inflammation, while the severity of inflammation did not seem to have a particular impact on the volumetric features of this biologic fluid.
