Abstract: Purpose To provide the dental professional with a concise and practical overview of the management techniques used in cancer patients who receive bisphosphonate treatment and have established osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), or are at risk of developing this disorder. Methods The eight official guidelines published by professional societies from various countries on the prevention and management of ONJ were analyzed and augmented with the experiences of the authors in treating these patients. Results The consolidated recommendations are presented for 3 distinct groups: patients about to start bisphosphonate therapy, those already receiving these agents without ONJ, and patients who have developed ONJ. In addition, the results of conservative treatment strategies on ONJ outcome are summarized.
