Abstract: Poor personal hygiene is one of the ten leading behavioural risk factors
contributing to the global burden of diseases. Promoting optimal hygiene
behaviours are important as they are cost-effective ways of reducing and
preventing diseases. This highlights the importance of identifying factors
which influence hygiene behaviours, particularly in adolescents. Adolescence
is an important period of life as behaviours developed during that period of
life are likely to be sustained throughout adulthood. Furthermore, in order to
plan effective hygiene promoting programmes in adolescents it is important
to understand the relationship between determinants of hygiene behaviours
and how they influence hygiene behaviours. Very few studies attempted to
develop and examine the theoretical model of factors influencing hygiene
behaviours. Recently, a theoretical model for hygiene behaviours in
adolescents was developed and tested in an Iranian setting. This model aimed
to bridge the gap in understanding factors influencing oral hygiene
behaviours in adolescents. In this model, shortcomings of the previous
models were addressed using the evidence base. This model was reliable and
valid. The model can be used when planning hygiene promoting
programmes. Hygiene promoting programmes that address evidence based
indicators of hygiene behaviours will be more efficient and effective.
