This book explores the ways in which different parts of the new South Africa work to finish the process of constructing a national identity. In the situation of South Africa, newness emerged as the discourse speaking to (in the sense of bringing into being) the nation. This is a conversation that builds the country as a sovereign identity, "conceived" in the struggle against apartheid and its negotiated settlement and "born" in the first democratic elections and the Constitution of 1996.
