Authors: Yang, Tao (University of California at Berkeley)
Book Description:
Chaotic communication is a new discipline created by joint force of mathematicians, physicists and electrical engineers. In 1980's a few chaotic electronic circuits were built. These circuits verified the idea that chaos exists in many electrical systems. In 1990's control and synchronization of chaotic systems were studied and different chaotic communication systems were also studied and implemented. Since then, the chaotic communication sys-tems have been attracted enormous amount research activities from all over the world. So far, the main research activities are focused on

1. Theory of control and synchronization of chaotic systems;
2. Chaotic secure communication systems: analog and digital;
3. Chaotic cryptography;
4. Chaotic spread spectrum communication systems;
5. Implementation of chaotic circuits for generating chaotic carriers;
6. Other specialized chaotic communication systems such as chaotic radar, chaotic impulse radio and chaotic optical communication systems.

Since the theory of control and synchronization chaotic systems has been well documented in many publications and a few books, it is not the purpose of this book to explore them further. In this book, the main focus will be the principle and design of different kinds of chaotic communication systems.
As a newly developed discipline with hundreds of directly related and thousands of indirectly related publications, it is not easy for a beginner to have a clear picture of the landscape of chaotic communications. Even engineers and experts from other disciplines such as telecommunication feel confused when they read jargons such as "strange attractor", "basin of at-traction'' and "chaotic switching". The deep root of chaotic communication systems from the theory of nonlinear dynamics makes a rather high threshold for a beginner to appreciate the essence of this field. The purpose of this book is to systematically study the most essential and important aspects of chaotic communication systems.
This book provides the reader with clear and complete knowledge of this field through carefully extracting and assembling the most important research results that have been reported since 1990's. The researchers in this field divide into three groups for the limited funding for chaotic communi-cation community. The first group believes chaotic communication systems can finally be commercialized and bring them a fortune. The second group believe that only a few chaotic communication schemes need further study, all others are the history. The third group believes that chaotic communication is dying. In this book the author will provide the reader with a comprehensive evaluation of the past of chaotic communication systems and let the reader to decide which picture indicates the future of this field.
Although in this book the chaotic communication systems consisting of continuous-time chaotic systems are emphasized, it is not to marginalize the applications of discrete-time chaotic systems to chaotic communication systems. In fact, both continuous-time and discrete-time chaotic systems play exchangeable roles in chaotic communication systems if sampling-and-hold devices are used. Therefore, it is only necessary to study one of them.
This book will:

h provide the experts of chaotic communication systems with a global view of the historical results and the most recent progress of this field;
h provide the communication engineers and physicists with a quick reference of assessing the possibility of the combination of both conventional and chaotic communication systems;
h provide students with design methods and principles of chaotic communication systems
