APPROPRIATE READING INSTRUCTION FOR GIFTED STUDENTS IN 2010 $100.00
Authors:  Teresa Rowlison and Jamie Suzanne Baker
Abstract:
Gifted students may learn to read without difficulty. However, they must still receive high quality reading instruction in order to ensure that their reading skills continue to advance and they continue to be challenged. Much of the current attention is focused on struggling students who are not proficient on required assessments. This often leaves gifted students to read on their own without any direct reading instruction. In order to appropriately meet the needs of gifted students in the area of reading, assessment results must be triangulated and used to develop appropriate reading instruction. The absence of appropriate reading instruction for gifted students may have dire consequences, including underachievement and/or emotional turmoil. This chapter will discuss how to triangulate reading assessment results to develop appropriate instruction for gifted students and discuss the many instructional strategies that may be used to appropriately differentiate instruction.
