CRITICAL LITERACY IN CRITICAL CONDITIONS: REIMAGINING EDUCATION AND SOCIETY $100.00
Authors:  Doug Morris
Abstract:
This piece is written in frustration, agony and concern. Even while individuals within multiple zones of education have been and remain courageously committed to critical forms of education linking critical thought, reflection, experience and understanding to informed, inclusive and energized transformative endeavors, the overall institutions of education in U.S. society have largely failed (and continue to fail) to prepare people to understand the causes, agents and effects of, and to confront and find solutions for, the complex, interconnected and potentially catastrophic crises and challenges that continue to emerge with greater magnitude across a wide-range of spheres of global society.
The absence of large-scale institutional transformations in the field of education (inside and outside schools), across multiple domains, linked to qualitative transformations, careful consideration of options, and salient re-explications in the arena of dominant social institutions and systemic imperatives, suggests a collapse into a cynical comfort with the malaise and a predictable reproduction of the present social arrangements that, without ongoing critique, challenge, and change, seriously threaten to undermine, if not eliminate, the future
