Knowledge and Practical Attitudes Towards Gloves Use in Dental Practice pp. 73-87 $100.00
Authors:  (Fethi Maatouk, Dentistry School of Monastir, Tunisia, Afef Zribi, Tunisia)
Nowadays hygiene and asepsis took an important place in all the medical fields and
particularly in Dentistry, because the "hand of the dentist" can constitute a important
source of infection. So, one basic measure of infection control, supposes a careful hand
washing and the use of gloves which form a physical barrier and protect the Health Care
Workers from occupational exposure to blood and saliva.
Our study carried out with the University Dental Clinic of Monastir (Tunisia) aims
to evaluate knowledge in dental practice and to investigate their attitudes and practices
toward the use of the gloves. It consists of a survey by auto-administrated questionnaire
managed to a sample of 106 dental practitioners including 16 teachers, 26 trainees and 64
dental students.
Findings revealed that about 78.3% of dentists wore gloves, 21.7% wore masks and
2% wore protective eyeglasses. The students have a minimum necessary knowledge
about gloves use but do not have a correct practice while the other practitioners have the
good knowledge and the good practical attitudes.
Our study shows an important need to improve the studentsí behaviour with respect
of occupational hygiene and safety conditions in order to reduce occupational blood
exposure hazards.
