Abstract:
This paper reports the results obtained for the investigation on the application of
laboratory synthesised zeolites to establish its ability to remove cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb)
and arsenic (As) ions from aqueous solutions. The synthesised zeolites were prepared
using the filtrates collected from a FA and AMD co-disposal reaction, followed by
subjecting the filtrates to alkaline hydrothermal zeolite synthesis. Batch experiments were
performed in the laboratory on different sources of acid mine drainage (AMD)
wastewater, collected from different mine locations in South Africa. These AMD sources
were dosed with various dosages of the synthesised zeolites to investigate the efficacy of
the zeolites in removing Cd, Pb and As from the AMD. The test results indicated that
when increasing synthesised zeolite dosages of 520 g/L were added to the acid mine
drainage (AMD) wastewater, the concentrations of Cd, Pb and As in the wastewater were
reduced accordingly.orption capacity.
