Authors:  (Claire Hartmann-Thompson, Michigan Molecular Institute, Midland, MI)
Abstract:
The use of carbon-polymer composite materials in the transducer elements of
electronic nose devices is reviewed. Carbon-polymer composite sensors generate
information by swelling and changing their resistivity in response to a vapor. Sets of n
carbon-polymer composite elements, where each element is fabricated from a different
polymer, may then be assembled into an n-component array that generates a ‘fingerprint’
of n different resistivity changes in response to a given vapor. The fundamental concepts,
history, function, design, applications and capabilities of carbon-polymer composite
sensor arrays are discussed. The development of commercial carbon-polymer composite
array-based electronic nose devices, and the differences between the electronic nose and
the mammalian nose are also reviewed.
