Abstract: Objectives: Comorbidities and complications accompanying diabetes make quality health care essential for all type 2 diabetics. Literature holds studies investigating quality improvement opportunities through evaluation of quality of diabetes care. To our knowledge no study exists in international databases about quality of diabetes care evaluation in Turkey. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the quality of diabetes care in a Turkish type 2 diabetic population based on standardized measures in order to prioritize targets for improving the quality in light of attained results. The objective of this chapter is to report the results of this local study, as well as a presentation of a literature review on quality of diabetes care studies conducted worldwide. Methods: The study was performed on 253 type 2 diabetes patients from the diabetes outpatient clinics of two hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey. For the assessment of quality of
diabetes care, data regarding the following quality indicators were collected: annual number of physician visits; annual number of blood lipid panel measurements; annual number of dilated eye examinations; annual number of HbA1c measurements; annual number of blood pressure measurements; annual number of foot examinations; annual number of nephropathy controls; annual number of microalbuminuria measurements; the HbA1c, LDL-cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
