Abstract: Athletes are known to be prone to illnesses such as infection and asthma, which is due to exercise-related skewness of the immune response, and injury-related inflammation in the muscle-skeleton system. The Brazilian medicinal mushroom, Agaricus blazei Murill (AbM), has strong immunomodulatory properties and is shown to protect against infections, allergy and asthma in animal models. An AbM-based extract (AndoSanTM) is also found to have anti-inflammatory effect both in healthy individuals and in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Hence, it is suggested that AbM mushroom extract may be beneficial for athletes during strenuous exercise.
