General concepts on transcatheter cardiovascular therapies (pp. 57-76) $100.00
Authors:  (Nicolas Brozzi, Jose L. Navia, Sharif Al-Ruzzeh)
Abstract:
Development of transcatheter therapies has revolutionized the surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease. The less invasive nature of these approaches has improved recovery and expanded surgical indications to higher risk patients. Since the early days of coronary angioplasty transcatheter therapies have been developed for the treatment of numerous structural cardiac and vascular diseases. The development of these procedures has required impressive technical advances not only for the design of implantable devices, but also the tools to deliver them such as wires, sheaths, and catheters; and the imaging systems which have made it all possible. The development of hybrid operating rooms has brought all these technologies together creating an optimal environment for transcatheter cardiovascular interventions. This chapter presents an overview of the basic knowledge required to perform most transcatheter therapies, including description of instruments, sheath, wires, catheters, and devices, as well as diagnostic and intraoperative imaging.
