Abstract: This research aims to explore project management competency requirements specific to managing large and complex projects in the context of the Ghanaian construction industry. It adopted a Focus Group Discussion to identify eighteen core project management competency areas (PMCAs). A structured survey questionnaire was then administered to one hundred project managers to elicit relevant data (on these PMCAs) that were analysed through the chi-square test of hypotheses. The study’s findings identify important competency profiles that can be mapped and customised towards improving workplace learning and training requirements of project managers in Ghana and, perhaps, other developing countries.
