Lifestyle-Related Dental Trauma: A Preventable Condition $43.00
Authors:  Yehuda Zadik and Liran Levin
The article reviews the common dental trauma associated with life style and habits: un-protected sports, oral (tongue) and perioral (lip) piercing and intra-oral ornament wearing, foreign body and para-function habits, and dental barotrauma (mechanical injury to tooth or restoration owing to barometric pressure changes).
The article describes the critical role of the dental team in prevention of these injuries, by periodic examination to high risk patients, treatment of faulty restorations as well as secondary caries lesions, customization of mouthguard to patients dealing with sport activities and increase motivation of the patient to use it. Dentists should motivate their patients to immediately remove oral ornaments, and look for other foreign body habits and educate the patient to cease these habits. Education of dental professionals as well as of populations at high risk for dental trauma might result in a decrease in injury severity and occurrence by means of prevention together with an increase in proper and prompt treatment following tooth injuries.
