Authors:  (Andressa dos Santos Nicolau, Roberto Schirru, Nuclear Engineering Program, COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
Abstract:
Nuclear energy is the second largest source of electricity in countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Although it started to be employed less than forty years ago, it presents today a stake of 24% of the total energy generated, and the third most used source in the world with a market share of 17%, along with energy from hydroelectric sources [1]. The philosophy of safety of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) focuses that NPP are designed, built and operated to the highest quality standards and conditions that ensure high reliability. The prevailing thinking is that safety can only be improved in an environment of zero tolerance. Both the efficiency and the safety in the operation of a NPP depend on the performance and conditions of the thousands of components of its several subsystems.
