Abstract: The initial treatment of burns is in most cases, performed by health care personnel not specialized or experienced in treating burns. In circumstances where rapid transportation to a burns center is not possible, such as in hostile environments but also in Western Europe and North America, there can be a vital indication to perform escharotomy during the first period of treatment at a primary hospital. The indications for escharotomy of the neck, upper and lower extremities, and the thoracic and abdominal wall are discussed. The proper operative technique and post-surgical treatment of these procedures are described.
